Thoroughbred Nutritionist Team

Kathy Lawson BSc (Hons) MSc

Thoroughbred Nutritionist (North)

Born into the rural community in Leicestershire, Kathy has always been amongst horses. From the age of 10, she rode Show Ponies and Mountain and Moorland Ponies at National level in the summer and hunted with the Quorn in the winter.

By the time she went to University she had already gained the NPS Stud Assistant’s Certificate and indeed rode for the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth. She graduated in 1983 with a BSc. (Hons) in Agriculture having spent 6 months of her third year working on sheep and cattle stations (where they also happened to either breed Thoroughbreds or play Polo) in New South Wales, Australia.

Her first employment was on a Thoroughbred stud in the south of England but after a year she was offered a job working for a prestigious Newmarket bloodstock agency. Here she worked as a bloodstock agent travelling all over the World buying and selling elite Thoroughbreds. After three years she joined the International Racing Bureau as Trainers Service Executive assisting trainers to place and run their horses abroad. It was this company that assisted in the setting up and initial running of the Dubai World Cup.

In 1994 she went back to University to study for an MSc. in Equine Science. On completion, she lectured to third year degree level in equine science, behaviour, exercise physiology, breeding and racing at Writtle College and latterly Oxford Brookes University.

Kathy joined SPILLERS in August 2001 as a Thoroughbred Nutritionist, a position that involves advising many of the top racehorse trainers and Thoroughbred breeders in the UK on the nutrition of their charges as well as assisting the technical nutritionists at SPILLERS to develop new products.

Kay Scriven - Thoroughbred Nutritionist (South)

Born and bred in the West Country in Somerset, Kay has has been immersed in horses from a very young age, with her first pony being ‘Brandy’ who she spent time competing at local shows. From Brandy, Kay moved on to riding and training her father’s racehorses as a teenager. After leaving school at 16 Kay decided to gain more experience in the industry and so gained a few weeks placement with David Nicholson, a top National Hunt trainer in Gloucestershire. Here Kay worked alongside and made great friends with now top professional NH Jockeys Robert Thornton and Richard Johnson.

Kay's parents, however, thought it wasn’t a good idea to follow in the potentially dangerous career of a NH Amateur Jockey, so she decided to study for 2 years full time at her local college and qualified as Legal Secretary. This held her in good stead but her real passion always came back to horses and most of all Racing.

In 2005 Kay had a change of career and got her first job as an Equine Sales Representative, during these five years in this role she gained a great deal of experience out in the field advising all types of horse owners with their feeding queries. Kay has worked at all main advanced events such as Badminton, Burghley, Bramham, and also attended many feed seminars in Ireland in order to keep up -to-date with product knowledge and developments within the Industry.

In May 2010 Kay joined the SPILLERS Team as Thoroughbred Sales Nutritionist for the Southern half of the UK. Kay say's 'this is a great job role for me, as I am totally focused on providing quality nutritional support to existing and new clients ’.

Kay's main aim in her role is to have happy customers and trainers but is also very passionate about seeing those happy racehorses looking and performing great on the SPILLERS professional racing products!!

As a family they have owned several horses and ponies since, and whilst she does not currently have a horse of her own, she often takes to the saddle and ride’s her mum’s horse Cally as much as possible. Cally is now 27 years young and despite taking life at a slightly slower pace is still full of character.

Sarah completed her National Diploma in Horse Management followed by a Foundation Degree in Equine Studies at Shuttleworth College. She then went on to complete her Degree in Equine Science at Writtle College in Essex. She has since had various jobs including working at riding schools, on a show pony stud and for a specialist travel agent selling horse riding holidays.
