SPILLERS® welcomes new NOPS code

October 2009

SPILLERS®, one of the UK’s longest-established equine feed manufacturers, has signed up to the new British Equestrian trade Association (BETA), Universal Feed Assurance Scheme (UFAS), Naturally Occurring Prohibited Substances (NOPS) Code, to ensure that customers can continue to rely on the brand’s renowned quality and safety.

The Code was developed by BETA in response to an increased incidence of positive dope tests for the NOPS morphine in racehorses. Feeds and supplements conforming to the new Code will carry labelling to reassure owners and trainers of the stringent quality management procedures that have been undertaken during every step of the manufacturing process for each product.

Ruth Bishop, technical director of SPILLERS® said: “As founder members of the industry committee responsible for developing the code we are committed to the provision of an independent verification scheme to reassure our customers of the reliability of our products.”

“We strongly believe that a positive dope test is a disaster, not only for not only for the trainer or rider concerned, but also for the sport, and for any company whose products might be found to contain a NOPS. With the huge variety of feed and supplement products available, a trainer or competitor must be able to discern which companies are serious about minimising the risk of NOPS. “
