Feeds for those prone to Laminitis
Low calorie feeds
Inappropriate nutrition can cause laminitis.
An excess of starch in cereals is one risk. Rich pasture presents another; too much grass can result in high intake of sugars and fructans which are sources of highly fermentable carbohydrate. Reducing the risk of nutritionally induced laminitis is a matter of management: restricting grass intake (particularly during the spring and autumn) and avoiding high starch compound feeds.
Research into laminitis recommends high fibre diets with low levels of starch, sugar and fructans, and a broad spectrum of vitamins and minerals. SPILLERS® High Fibre Cubes and SPILLERS HAPPY HOOF® contain essential vitamins and minerals with high fibre, low starch and low sugars. Both feeds are approved by The Laminitis Trust.
