SPILLERS® recognise that we as a company have a responsibility to be sustainable from a social, economical and environmental point of view.
The SPILLERS® team are conscious to make sustainable business practice a seamless part of everyday life.
SPILLERS® know that it’s important to save energy, ensure a healthy workplace and promote sustainability among our associates, customers and suppliers. Read on to find out more:
Saving Energy
Removing Surplus Heating Pipes – saving 15-20% on energy bills as well as reducing CO2 output.
Utilising Gravity to reduce Energy Input – the raw materials in the SPILLERS® feed mill are put into silos located at the top of the plant. They are then ground, blended or flaked as they gradually move towards the ground, using gravity as their power.
Energy Efficient Lighting – all light fittings on the SPILLERS® site have been replaced with more energy efficient systems
Monitoring Energy Usage – monitoring the energy used by each machine or process, finding out the most energy efficient way to make each SPILLERS® product.
Healthy Workplace Initiative
Air Quality – there is good access to fresh air across the site, both in the offices and the production areas
Environmental Permitting Regulations 2007 – the SPILLERS® Mill is a low risk pollution site
Light and Noise – there is plenty of natural light allowed into the buildings, either by windows, skylights or light tubes.
Eco-Intelligent Building Design
Building Design – The new SPILLERS® Fibres plant was designed to be “eco-intelligent,” using local bricks and insulating materials.
Considerate Contractor Scheme – the contractor was asked to register with the “considerate contractors scheme” and was evaluated externally for compliance with the scheme.
Environmental Building Materials – the steel was certified to environmental management standards and the roof insulation has an ozone depletion potential of 0.
Landscaping – A rainwater butt collects water for landscaping, but all the plants were chosen so they do not require regular watering.
Associate Sustainability
Green Travel – about 20% of associates cycle to work each day and many car share
Job Satisfaction - associates are able to suggest and implement improvements to existing processes and procedures, and have great job satisfaction from being able to get involved
Work-Life Balance and Work-Related Stress – shift patterns are variable and flexible. Administration, email and travel have all been minimised to reduce work related stress and maximise a good work-life balance.
Sustainability among Suppliers and Customers
Raw Materials – 97% of our raw materials are from sustainable sources, with 70-72% from within the UK. As much as possible is sourced from local farms.
Reduction of packaging – we aim to use less shrink wrap and have moved from
3-ply to 2-ply paper bags so less materials are wasted and the bags are easier to pack, meaning the packing machines use less power.
Deliveries and Collections - all good are transported at start times as early as 4am to avoid congestion, about 85% of goods are transported on back load consignment and all goods transported to Scotland go by train to save fuel.
Waste and Re-use of Materials – SPILLERS® have sought to “reduce, recycle and rethink” their waste. Examples include selling on by-products of our raw materials we cannot use, paper, aluminium cans, lamps, transport packaging, waste plastic wrap, oily rags and scrap metal are all recycled.
