Redwings Feed Release
February 2008
SPILLERS® has donated horse feed to help Redwings Horse Sanctuary care for some of the horses and ponies rescued from Buckinghamshire earlier this month.
Redwings has taken 21 horses, ponies and donkeys into the care of its rescue and rehabilitation facility in Norfolk as a result of what appears to be one of the worst cases of neglect that the UK has ever seen. Many of the animals now in the charity’s care require specialist veterinary treatment and intensive rehabilitation. Good nutrition will also play a key role in their recovery. Initially the horses and ponies are being fed on hay, together with SPILLERS® High Fibre Cubes and SPILLERS HAPPY HOOF®, which are safe, high fibre feeds containing a broad spectrum of vitamins and minerals.
Clare Lockyer BSc (Hons) RNutr, a registered nutritionist and the Research and Development Manager for SPILLERS® explains: “When feeding severely underweight or neglected horses and ponies it is vitally important to feed a balanced safe diet that is high in fibre and low in starch and sugar in order to prevent a shock to the system, which could result in the onset of colic or laminitis. We are pleased to be able to offer practical support to help such a worthwhile and professional organisation as Redwings. They are doing a fantastic job with their rehabilitation of these poor animals. ”
Nicola Markwell, press and communications officer for Redwings Horse Sanctuary said: ”We are thrilled to receive such a generous donation from SPILLERS® . This feed should keep these 21 horses, ponies and donkeys very well-fed for the next two months, which represents a considerable saving for the charity.”
