Feeding for the Competition
Want to compete with the best?
Choosing the right feed
Horse owners competing regularly in competitions and those aiming to qualify for the Trailblazers Championships may be looking for that little bit extra out of their feed. Competition feeds that provide optimal energy from controlled sources such as fibre, starch and oil are ideal as they will provide the extra energy required without contributing to bad behaviour. Quality protein is also essential to support muscle tone and to help build topline. An enhanced supply of vitamins and mineral are necessary for overall health, well-being, and a blend of omega 3&6 oils will help give your horse a shiny coat vital during the competition season.
When feeding the more laid back competition horse, a feed higher in cereals and starch will provide him with instant energy, as these products are digested rapidly and released into the blood stream as glucose. This has the same effect as if we eat a sugary food, and gives them a burst of energy. Feeding lower levels for a “fizz” effect on a more laid back horse can give them more sparkle without causing them to gain excess weight.
A good feeding routine, combined with an appropriate fitness programme should ensure your horse will be on top form and ready for what ever level of competition you have planned for him. A horse that is healthy on the inside will look and feel healthier on the outside, and competing will be an enjoyable experience for both of you.
