Top 10 feeding tips for ponies
Follow the SPILLERS® feeding tips to help keep your pony in top condition.
- Feed little and often
Ponies have small stomachs – smaller than a rugby ball. Nature intended that they should browse for food. Do not give one larger meal but split feeds into at least two, preferably more, per day.
- Feed by weight
Know how much a scoop holds. Remember, a scoop of nuts will be heavier than one of mix, so make adjustments for heavier feeds.
- Use good quality food
Mouldy or dusty food should be avoided. Make sure you check the ‘best before’ label when you buy to make sure food it is fresh.
- Make changes to diet gradually
Part of the pony’s gut uses tiny living organisms (microbes) to break down food. These microbes need time to adjust to new feeds, so allow 7-10 days to change diets.
- Fresh clean water should always be available.
- Keep to the same meal times
Ponies are creatures of habit and have built in clocks.
- Do not exercise immediately after a meal
Allow time for feed to settle – at least an hour after feeding before you ride.
- Feed according to bodyweight
If you know the weight of your pony (you can do this with a weight tape) it will be a good starting point when working out how much to feed.
- Feed according to work level
Give feed for the work the pony is doing now, not according to what you expect him to do.
- Know your pony
When you get to know your pony and his habits you will be able to tell if he is in good health or off colour, getting fat or losing weight. All animals are individual characters.
