WALTHAM® publishes third Equine Research Digest
September 2008
The world-leading WALTHAM® Equine Studies Group, led by Dr Pat Harris MA PhD, VetMB DipECVCN MRCVS, has published the third volume of the WALTHAM® Equine Research Digest. The publication provides an overview of the exciting research work on equine nutrition, behaviour and care, carried out by the group and its excellent collaborators during 2006 and 2007.
The WALTHAM® Equine Studies Group provides the scientific support behind the SPILLERS®and WINERGY® brands. The Group aims to share knowledge to help improve the health, welfare, behaviour and performance of horses throughout the world. To this end the Group gave more than 60 national and international lectures to vets, researchers, horse owners, trainers and breeders during 2006 and 2007. In addition the Group, together with nutritionists at SPILLERS® and WINERGY®, contributed to around 400 papers and articles in reviews, text books, proceedings, manuals and equestrian magazines.
The third WALTHAM® Equine Research Digest covers four key areas. The nutrition and health section includes the latest research on laminitis and insulin resistance, insulin sensitivity in mares and foals, antioxidant status and RAO. The nutrition and behaviour chapter examines food preferences and intake, the behaviour of stabled horses and the influence of diet on behaviour. The nutrition and performance section explores heart rate assessment, endurance exercise and glutamine supplementation. Finally the nutritional science chapter looks at energy intake and obesity, the nutritional value of pasture, growth and development plus the influence of diet on coat colour.
“The WALTHAM® Equine Studies Group fosters innovation by improving our understanding of the role of nutrition and its impact on the health, welfare and behaviour of performance horses,” said Dr Jeremy Brereton, managing director of Mars Horsecare. “At Mars Horsecare we apply the insights generated by WALTHAM® to continually improve our range of products under the SPILLERS® and WINERGY® brands. We also believe in contributing to the ‘knowledge revolution’ by making the insights available to all those who have the capacity to improve the health and welfare of horses.”

Note to editors
WALTHAM® is the world’s leading authority on pet care and nutrition. WALTHAM’s® science was the first to show the importance of vitamin C in equine lung health, first to show that increased levels of vitamin E in the mare’s diet increase the levels of lgG in colostrums, therefore supporting the foal’s immune system and first to show objectively that core diet can influence behaviour. Laminitis has also been a main area of research for WALTHAM® for many years. In 2002 WALTHAM® established a laminitis research consortium which has developed into a major international collaborative programme providing exciting new insights into this important condition. WALTHAM’s® professional staff and academic consultants are all internationally recognised as experts in their field, committed to delivering health and longevity through positive nutrition.
