For those of us who have non-horsey partners, trying to convince them that a day out at Burghley, Badminton or Blenheim will be fun can be a struggle. Their endless whines of ‘It’s not a real sport’, ‘Watching horses dance about is boring’, ‘I don’t want to stand in a field all day’ can be tiresome especially when you know that they will love it…if you can only get them there to experience it. So to help you out, we’ve come up with a list of reasons why an International three-day event is a fabulous day out even for the un-initiated…

Location, Location, Location

If they are a National Trust enthusiast, then tempt them with the fact that all of the International Horse Trials are held at beautiful English and Scottish estates some of which are not always open to the general public. Whilst you won’t be able to access the houses/palaces, you can tell your partner that they will be able to walk around the grounds, as you sneakily walk the XC course!

Food, glorious food!

Who doesn’t like food? Well at an International Horse Trials, there will be food stalls galore for your non-horsey partner to choose from. At Burghley a few weeks ago, we spotted pub food, fish & chips, noodle bars, afternoon tea and ice cream parlours to name a mere few. Once your partner has selected their meal, why not escort them to the main arena where there will be an abundance of seating for them to sit, relax and enjoy their food whilst you’re able to watch the dressage or show jumping!

Champagne bar

Or Pimms, or gin! Whatever their tipple, you’ll be able to incentivise them with a drink if they accompany you to the horse trials. What could be better than sitting out in the sun with a glass of bubbly in your hands…

Computer games

At Burghley, there was a simulator where you could ride around the famous cross-country course. Whilst it’s no Call of Duty, Fifa Football or whatever else they are up all night playing, the cross-country simulator is technically a computer game so it wouldn’t be bending the truth too much to say that they’ll be able to get some gaming in during the visit…

Shop till you drop!

Whether you are of the horsey or non-horsey variety, one of the main reasons to go to an International Horse Trials is for the shopping. From homewares and clothing to big ticket items such as cars, beds, art and holidays there’s literally something for everyone. You get big ‘country’ brands such as Land Rover, Dubarry, Joules and Musto to small independent boutique stores and many of them have ‘show’ offers available so there are lots of bargains to be snapped up.
