We recently caught up with Kate Honey, an international 5* event rider based in Lambourn to find out how she keeps her horses looking so well throughout the year.

“I’m Kate Honey an international event rider who has ridden round several 5* events including Badminton on a horse which I produced from a 5 year old. I have produced multiple horses up the levels competing at a number of major events at home and abroad. With my family we also breed and produce youngsters, two of whom have gone on recently to jump round Kentucky 5*. I also field master for a couple of local hunts over a range of different countries.

I have chosen to feed SPILLERS particularly SPILLERS Alfalfa-Pro Fibre as it is very palatable for the horses. They find it easy to digest as it is high in fibre along with being high in oil and Vitamin E. The horses all look very well and have a lovely shine to their coats. The feed is also ideal for horses that are prone to gastric ulcers or may be a bit highly strung.

I use SPILLERS Alfalfa-Pro Fibre on all the horses on my yard from the top event horses to hunters and pony club ponies, we also use it on the young stock.  One example is Piccolo, a 3* event horse who has suffered from gastric problems ever since we had him. He gets runny droppings and can be grumpy to tack up at times. Since he started to be fed on SPILLERS Alfalfa-Pro Fibre he has had very little problem with his stomach and guts.

Alongside the SPILLERS Alfalfa-Pro Fibre we feed SPILLERS Stamina+ Cubes or the SPILLERS Gro N’ Win™ Balancer depending on the horse or pony. We find that these feeds work well together.

I would recommend SPILLERS feed particularly the SPILLERS Alfalfa-Pro Fibre to anyone for their horses. I personally think they will notice a big difference when they start to feed their horses on it by how well they look and how settled they are.”

Suitable for performance and leisure horses alike, SPILLERS Alfalfa-Pro Fibre is ideal for feeding alongside traditional compound feeds and balancers. Unlike many other high oil alfalfa products, SPILLERS Alfalfa-Pro Fibre contains added Vitamin E to balance the high oil content. It also carries the BETA™ EGUS approval mark.

Kate chooses to feed alongside SPILLERS Stamina+ Cubes which are a brilliant choice to support gut health and reduce the risk of excitability. In addition to providing a full complement of vitamins and minerals to ensure a balanced diet, they contain probiotic live yeast alongside prebiotic MOS and FOS to support digestive health.

For horses that maintain weight on less than the recommended ration of SPILLERS Stamina+ Cubes, Kate feeds SPILLERS Gro N’ Win™ Balancer. Although designed for breeding stock, this balancer is sometimes a useful way of providing additional amino acids to support muscle and topline in other horses too.

Thank you, Kate, for taking the time to speak with us about your feeding requirements for your horses, best of luck in 2023!
