Meet Casper!
As part of the longstanding Redwings / SPILLERS Horse Feeds partnership, this year SPILLERS also committed to supporting one of Redwings’ senior stars. Hugely passionate about senior horses, SPILLERS wanted to have a horse to call their own here at Redwings, and Casper was the obvious choice being such a charismatic favourite. We thought we’d share a bit about his history, who he is and continue to follow the adventures of Casper and his friends in a quarterly blog.
How did Casper become a Redwings hero?
18-year-old, Thoroughbred cross Casper was rescued from Wales in 2008, alongside two other horses, after they were found very underweight and with significant untreated worm burdens. He was rescued by the team at the Society for the Welfare of Horses and Ponies (SWHP), and with their love and support made a full recovery and went on to be rehomed.
In 2019, SWHP merged with Redwings, and when his Guardian’s circumstances changed,Redwings welcomed him into the sanctuary and offered him a home for life. Due to poor conformation, which has led to some lameness issues, Casper is now a permanent sanctuary resident, meaning he will spend the rest of his life at Redwings under the expert care of their veterinary and care teams. He now lives at Redwings Hapton HQ, in Norfolk, which is also home to their Horse Hospital.
Known not only for his dashing good looks, but also his friendly personality (if Casper thinks there might be fuss to be had, he is always happy to present himself at the fence!) he was the perfect fit for SPILLERS’ own special veteran adoption star.
At Redwings, the Adoption Stars speak for themselves, sending their sponsors updates from their lives in the sanctuary from their unique first-pony perspective. So, it is only right to let Casper have his time to shine with us at SPILLERS… over to Casper!

Delighted to meet you, and I hope you’ll agree that I was the perfect fit for this job as I am natural in front of the camera - just put a lens in my direction and my handsome visage will do the rest!
But there’s much more to me than my good looks! I absolutely adore meeting people and if anyone so much as glances in my direction, I soften my eyes into a well-practiced expression which makes it impossible for anyone to walk past me without stopping for a Casper cuddle!
And I am not just a friend to the two-legged folks, I am known as a friend to my horse pals too. So much so, that I was recently employed in the role of ‘professional best friend’ to my pal Smirnoff, who was receiving veterinary care in the Redwings Horse Hospital, and needed a cool, calm and collected friend to keep him company and on his way to feeling better… enter yours truly!
I have heard my carers and the vets refer to me as a “good egg” which sounds a bit strange to me, as I am undoubtedly a horse, but I believe they mean it as a compliment – so I will take it! My photo might imply I was caught snoozing on the job by my carers, but Smirnoff and I were simply making the most of a sunbathing opportunity.
So, if I were to summarise myself?
I would say I’m tall, dark and handsome, but my greatest quality is my big heart. I’m so pleased SPILLERS have chosen me as their special Adoption Star as hopefully it will mean far more of their tasty treats come my way! Plus they’ll be sharing my stories, so I'll get to be even more famous - I look forward to telling you more about my life at Redwings.

Yes! We have 2 sites in Norfolk and one in Essex where you can meet some of the wonderful herd and have some nose scratches as well as grab a coffee and cake.
